Sagging Jawline and Jowls

Losing your defined jawline can show your age like nothing else. But as it occurs gradually and over time, it can be hard to identify or recognise in yourself.

The lines you notice between your nose and the corners of the mouth are the nasolabial folds, which become more pronounced with age. The reason being is because with increasing age, we lose more fat in our faces. As we lose volume in our cheeks, gravity kicks in and everything slides down. You will see more wrinkles and a drooping jawline.

Patients will typically lift up their cheeks and ask to restore the cheek height and reduce the pressure on the middle and lower parts of the face. This is because they’ve lost volume in their face, and their skin has gravitated down, forming nasolabial folds, marionette lines at the corners of the mouth, and the dreaded sagging jowls appear.

Loose jowls happen naturally.

As you age, your skin starts to loosen. And some people are genetically predisposed to sagging jowls. Take a look at your mother or grandmother to see where you’re heading without intervention.

Extreme weight loss can also create sagging jowls earlier and more drastically. As you lose weight, you also lose fat from your face. Hence, the skin will be looser and you’re more likely to see the jowls sag.

Loss of volume in the face is the cause of jowls.

As mentioned, the loss of volume in the face is the cause of the jowls and therefore to help restore the volume, we use dermal fillers. Filler in the cheeks helps restore the fat pad and allows the cheeks to regain volume. Additionally, dermal fillers in the jowl area helps to redefine the jaw and replace that lost volume.
